History of The Grape Dr. ™

In 2002, I began working with Russell Williams of Williams Nursery, the exclusive representative for Sheehan Genetics in North America. That summer, I walked Tim Sheehan’s breeding test block alongside both Tim and Russell, learning firsthand how to evaluate and select varieties with true commercial potential. Under their mentorship, I gained valuable experience in vineyard evaluation, propagation, and cultural practice development. From 2002 to 2019, I helped refine the growing protocols for many Sheehan Genetics cultivars — practices still used widely in California’s San Joaquin Valley today.

Over the years, I also collaborated with other major breeding programs, nurseries, and growers. I supported protocol refinement for Columbine cultivars while the program was under AC Foods’ control, assisted the Sun World breeding program in troubleshooting cultural practices for several selections, and conducted a research project for Sunridge Nurseries on an IFG-bred variety they were growing commercially. These projects expanded my knowledge base and validated my consulting expertise across a diverse spectrum of breeding programs.

Today, my primary focus is on the Andriske Breeding Program in Australia. Their varieties have reached the stage where applied research, protocol development, and grower support are essential for successful adoption. My work includes helping growers understand these cultivars, refining vineyard practices, and troubleshooting challenges in both trial blocks and commercial expansions — domestically and internationally.

In addition to consulting, I also help farm a commercial vineyard known as God’s Vineyard. This hands-on role allows me to apply and test the very practices I recommend, giving me a real-world perspective that strengthens my research and advice.

Looking forward, my commitment is to continue bridging the gap between breeders and growers — ensuring that promising genetics are matched with the right cultural practices to achieve success in the vineyard and in the marketplace.
